So this week my class got to discuss our project topics with our fellow students. To do this, we paired up with our fellow students for four minute intervals at a time to explain our projects and provide feedback. After conferencing with several classmates, I began to get a much better idea as to how I will go about making this happen.
One suggestion that I will definitely look into is the economic side of going green. What are we currently spending on electricity? How much will it cost to be more energy efficient? I will research the industries that have a negative impact on the environment, as well as newer businesses that have an eco-friendly orientation.
It was also recommended that I explore zero-sort recycling. Where does is it all go? To do this, I plan on checking out Casella Waste Systems, which is a waste management business here in Rutland Vermont. Adding on to this, I want to research landfills and their effect on ecosystems.
Many of the other students in my class are conducting surveys, and I plan to construct a survey with questions that are related to my topic. However, I have some brainstorming to do as to what questions I will ask my peers. Because one my goals is to promote environmental and efficiency awareness on an individual level, a survey will be an ideal source of original, statistical research.
Another major goal I have is to make actual changes at my high school. At this point, these changes include replacing paper towels in bathrooms with hand dryers to eliminate the waste of paper and switching to reusable plastic plates in the cafeteria. In order to make this a reality, I can utilize my involvement in National Honors Society and Environmental Club to get more people involved. If I cannot accomplish my goals this year, then I can at least make it a movement that will bring change down the road.
A final suggestion I was given is to promote the educational aspect of environmental awareness. If kids were to learn the practices that I am stressing now, then they habitually be more inclined to recycle, conserve, reuse, etc.
All the advice I received from Speed Dating will no doubt be beneficial to the success of my project. Big thanks to everyone who contributed their ideas! I firmly believe that I can make a difference in my school, and in the minds of other individuals. Now it's time to make something happen!
